Repacking a parcel to cut volumetric weight

A box full of air is charged as if it were heavy. Repacking removes the empty space; it pays only while the contents stay protected.

When repacking lowers the price

Volumetric weight is length × width × height ÷ divisor, so empty space in a box is billed like weight. A smaller box or less retail packaging lowers volumetric weight; it does not change the actual weight.

  • Repacking pays when the box is much larger than its contents, or when shoe boxes and other rigid packaging add bulk.
  • Keep protective packaging for fragile items, electronics and anything that can be crushed.
  • Recalculate with the packed dimensions before deciding.

What CAINIAO does for free

  • Unpacking to reduce volume is free. You pay on the system weight when you consolidate, and the difference is refunded after packing, in 1 kg steps.
  • Photos, inspection and repacking are currently free; on the US route this is a limited-time offer.
  • Fragile items keep their outer packaging. A wooden crate can be ordered through customer service.
  • If only the outer box is crushed and the contents are intact, there is no compensation, whether or not you chose reinforcement.

Questions

How can I reduce my shipping cost?

Reduce volume. Because the charge follows the greater of actual and volumetric weight, removing unused space in the box often lowers the price more than removing weight does. Repack only as far as the contents stay protected.
